In April 2020, as Japan declared a state of emergency to slow the spread of COVID-19, restaurants in Japan were required to cut back on their services and operations. For consumers, this meant staying home and refraining from dining out, greatly disrupting a key source of revenue for many restaurants. With this shift in consumer behavior, restaurant sales saw a 39.6% drop from the previous year, a record decline forcing them out of business in record numbers....
