Scoot targets India's first-time flyers
Low-cost airline Scoot, based in Singapore, sees a new market opening up in lower-tier Indian cities as a new breed of traveller emerges, many of them flying for the first time.
What’s happening
Post-pandemic travel and holiday habits have changed, with air travel no longer the preserve of metro dwellers. “These are new exotic travellers,” according to Brian Torrey, general manager, India, at Scoot. “People are looking beyond known destinations. We are seeing new beach travellers.”
In an interview reported by Mint, Torrey identifies a “general enthusiasm for travel [and] experiences” that extend across the country.
Takeaways
- Social media is an important driver as people want to document and share their experiences with friends and family.
- Torrey reports people using ChatGPT to plan their itinerary before going to a travel agent to book flights and accommodation.
- Scoot says the market is being held back because new Indian airports are not included in the air service agreement between the two countries.
