One-third (31%) of the online population has listened to a podcast in the past month, according to research across 20 markets from the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism and YouGov.

Why it matters

Streaming platforms are battling it out for dominance while advertisers are investing more in podcast campaigns, but the medium has been disrupted over the past 18 months. The 31% of the online population who listen to podcasts is flat from 2020's figure – in-home consumption has grown but the daily commute, which is traditionally a key time for listening, has become less prominent.
