In the last couple of years, the hottest media story in Southeast Asia has been the rise of Facebook. The social network's growth has been remarkable globally; in this region, however, it has been astonishing. From pretty much nowhere in 2008, it had become the top social networking site across Southeast Asia by 2010, and is still growing rapidly.

What's curious about this growth, however, is that it is not part of some master plan hatched in Facebook's US headquarters....
