When detected and treated early enough, melanoma is almost always curable. In addition, unlike many other cancers, the signs of melanoma are often readily visible, and many can be detected through skin self-examination (SSE).

Not-for-profit Mollie's Fund decided to forgo traditional sun protection advertising and go underneath the skin itself to advocate the need for regular skin checks: a chilling graphic depicted melanoma as a hideous monster hiding beneath a benign-looking mole.
