Vogue: Project UNI-FORM

Vogue, a fashion magazine, and Angus Chiang, a Taiwanese fashion designer, collaborated to design a range of gender-neutral school uniforms in Taiwan.

Objective

For over a century, students in Taiwan have worn uniforms to school, with two different styles: distinctly feminine for girls and masculine for boys. The discipline of uniforms has long been a potent symbol of rigid thinking and an emphasis on obedience over creativity. In recent years, critical voices have proposed allowing students greater choice and ways of self-expression through their dress. In 2019, a senior high school in New Taipei initiated a week- long experiment where male students can wear skirts to school, attempt like such drew strong criticism from more traditional sectors of society.
