Where it All Started - Campaign Summary
The Romanian kulas ("Kula" = Turkish word for "tower") were built by boyars to defend their families and wealth from Turkish marauders. Of the 200 documented kulas, 27 have survived, in various degrees of conservation.
Kulas are the oldest secular buildings in southern Romania.
In time, they became a testimony and highlight of:
- rural life in the principality of Wallachia (southern Romania);
- Romanian traditional architecture;
- the national culture, with everything it stands for (art, crafts, gastronomy etc.).
