Mo Ibrahim Foundation (MIF), a foundation with a focus on the critical importance of leadership and governance in Africa, launched a series of online activities and took the stage at an event to create a positive conversation around African migrations.

Context

Challenge

One of the most remarkable trends of the past decade has been the rapid increase in anti-immigrant attitudes.

Between 2003 and 2012,190,425 migrants and asylum seekers arrived in Lampedusa, Italy, from Libya. Migration flows through the Mediterranean intensified as the transition to democracy evolved into a new Libyan civil war during 2014.

In 2017, Donald Trump came to power and fuelled a growing modern anti-immigration movement.

In South Africa, since mid-2018, immigrants from Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Malawi suffered discrimination, violence and even death.
