The Balakot face-off between India and its neighbour in early 2019 had a known message. It showed the country's continuing dependence on imported defence technology to protect its borders. The fighters deployed were of French (Mirage 2000s) and Russian (Sukhoi-30MKIs and MIG-21s) origin along with Israeli precision-guided bombs (Spice-2000s) and Swedish artillery (Bofors). India continues to be the world's 2nd largest military importer, second only to Saudi Arabia.
