It was unusual to hear the high-pitched heel-toe rhythm of cowboy boots coming down the hallway. Most Minnesotans wore boots from November through April. The sidewalks of the University of Minnesota's East campus were cleared after snowfalls of one inch or more, as were the steps to the Electrical Engineering building, where the broadcast classroom reaching the greater Twin Cities technical community was located. Jack Kilby's boots had less to do with the Minnesota winter conditions than with his Texas home....
