INTRODUCTION
To many, the death of animal activist Jill Phipps under a lorry on 2 February 1995 was the moment when the campaign condemning the transport of live animals for slaughter was at its most public. In fact, by the time Phipps and her fellow demonstrators had arrived in the ports of Shoreham and Brightlingsea much of the work had already been done.
