Going into the summer of 1997, Nike gave its advertising firm, Portland, Oregon-based Wieden & Kennedy, an "emergency assignment," according to Jimmy Smith, a copywriter for the agency. The "Product Assault" campaign "wasn't even budgeted for the summer, and we had to turn it around quickly," explained Smith in Kathy DeSalvo's August 1997 Shootarticle.
