One of the most Tweeted photographs from the first morning of the Global Mobile Internet Conference (GMIC), held in Beijing in May 2014, featured a lonely looking Sina Weibo mascot hovering around a quiet booth.

Chinese and Western netizens couldn't resist pointing out that Sina Weibo may be feeling dejected because its Twitter-like microblogging site has come under growing pressure from WeChat, a messaging app which has notched up almost 400m monthly active users.
