Microsoft, the technology company, is building its business operations on a slate of guiding principles that can help inform big decisions on complex issues.

As Facebook, Google and Twitter have come under the spotlight for various digital difficulties – from Russian electoral interference to privacy abuses to bot-posted messages – the news from Microsoft has been more favorable.

Only a few short years ago, some industry-watchers argued the Redmond, Washington-based enterprise was sliding towards irrelevance as a result of lagging behind its rivals in categories like online search, mobile, and social media.

In fact, however, the Redmond, Washington-based enterprise’s market capitalization, has doubled in the last four years, and recently surpassed that of Alphabet, the parent company of Google.
