COVID-19 boosts location sharing

An overview of location opt-in rates by region and app vertical during the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

More consumers are willing to share their location in mobile apps despite spending longer at home under coronavirus (COVID-19) lockdown rules, according to data from customer engagement platform Airship.

Globally, the rate of location sharing opt-in on mobile apps fell 2.5% year-on-year before COVID-19 in February 2020. However, this rate then increased 39% between February and June 2020 to 10.7% – "the highest average rate in years" according to Airship.

Of the eight regions measured, seven saw a decline in location sharing in February. From June 2020, though, five saw location sharing become more popular.
