Meharry Medical College: Fight for more Black doctors

Meharry Medical College formed the Consortium of Black Medical Schools to advance health equity across the US by training more Black healthcare professionals in medicine to treat the people who trust them.

A Systemic Problem

  • Minority populations have deep-rooted skep mainstream healthcare, rooted in historic mi and indifference.
  • Studies demonstrate that Black Americans tend to trust healthcare professionals who look like them more.
  • Yet only 5 percent of U.S. physicians are Black.

A Systemic Opportunity

  • In 2020 and 2021, Meharry Medical College formed the Consortium of Black Medical Schools to advocate for pandemic-related funding.
  • $88 million later, the four schools realized they were . stronger together than apart.
  • So, in 2021 and 2022, Meharry led the Consortium in a full throttle pursuit of the following objective:
