The slogans of today's new-generation digital banks illuminate what they promise to deliver. In this framework, banking is personalised (and personable). It's flexible, simple, and straightforward. It's designed around users and their ambitions.

All of this is a stark departure from the traditional banking experiences offered in the 20th century. With the consolidation of community banks into larger regional or national brands, consumer banks became increasingly monolithic - safe and secure, yes, but hardly responsive to their customers' needs.

The internet and technology continue to challenge these paradigms. Now, even big banks are scrambling to offer compelling digital experiences and weave together their on- and offline operations in a seamless, user-friendly way.
