THE RECENT announcement by W H Smith that it plans to sell its wholly-owned Virgin Our Price chain and the concomitant uncertainty about its future has forced VOP to shelve the imminent launch of its Internet music shop. According to Neil Boote, VOP marketing director, the launch has been postponed until ‘January at the earliest. A few years ago you could set-up an Internet site for a few thousand pounds but they’re now much more sophisticated and the stakes are higher. We’re determined to make this the pre-eminent site of its kind.’ HMV too has put back the launch date of its online ‘store’ until next Spring - although it is zip-lipped about the reasons why.
