NOT SINCE THE GLORY DAYS of 1993 when Ben Langdon slugged it out with Chris Still on the pavement of New Oxford Street has marketing’s parish pump enjoyed such a fracas as that between database marketing consultant Ed Carter and Stephen Burr, BT’s financial controller for marketing and sales. Carter, who weighs-in at 17 stone and looms 6ft 5’, expressed his disagreement with Burr about marketing budgets by pushing him up against a wall during a meeting. Battling Ed trained for this bout by previously socking it to Jeremy Miles, BT’s account director at Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO, who begged to differ with him over advertising strategy. Ed [who is clearly a very, very nice man] has been no stranger to controversy during his two-year consultancy stint with BT. In June last year he was embroiled in accusations of calling a phoney pitch as a cover for handing BT’s £8m dm account on a plate to US-based Devon Direct.
