NOW WE KNOW why Freepages chose its silly new name - Scoot [this issue, page 129]. It is to match the equally silly but cash-dynamic names of its new partners, the Internet search engines Yahoo! and Excite - both listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Scoot yesterday signed a joint venture deal with Excite and a near-identical agreement with Yahoo! is expected shortly. The move will make Scoot one of the largest companies of its kind in the UK and a serious rival to BT’s Yellow Pages and Talking Pages, both of which have their own Web sites.
