SAN BRUNO, California: Online video sharing leader is to make its programming more accessible to non-English speakers as it seeks to maximise its advertising revenues potential and extend its cultural reach.

The Google-owned company will create more international channels and translate its sites into the native languages of Brazil, France, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Poland and Spain. In addition, it will create country-specific sites in the UK and Ireland.

YouTube is hoping to stimulate more usage outside its US home territory as it gradually fine tunes the content and features that best suit local cultural sensitivities.

It also believes specific markets will make for a more appealing advertising outlet.

The expansion could, however, stumble across obstacles in the shape of local laws and community standards, adding to the weight of litigation YouTube faces in the US over alleged copyright infringements.
