The official website for next year’s soccer World Cup in Japan and South Korea will be produced and marketed by Yahoo!

The online giant has been made one of fifteen official global partners of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association, the sport’s governing body and organiser of the competition.

Yahoo! has exclusive rights to create, host, market and offer sponsorship for the sites for next year’s event, as well as the following World Cup in Germany in 2006.

“It opens up some new doors for us in advertising and promotion,” enthused Yahoo! president Jeff Mallett, though he declined to speculate how much money the online firm might make from the deal. Yahoo! does not expect to report any revenues from the agreement before the second quarter next year.
