According to internet audience measurement specialist MMXI Europe, the accolade of Britain's most frequently visited website has passed from one US-owned giant to another - Yahoo! to MSN (Microsoft Network).
The latest figures for June show that combined hits by Brits to MSN.com and MSN.co.uk totalled 4.76 million – up from 4.05m in May. Yahoo.com and Yahooco.uk also notched an aggregated increase from 4.34m to 4.48m.
MSN UK head of marketing Gillian Kent declared herself “absolutely thrilled” with the figures, whereas Yahoo! Europe grouchily declined to comment other than to observe that monthly audience figures were "reasonably erratic".
Former market leader (until February), Dixons Stores Group-owned Freeserve.com, held on to third place in the league table, recording a modest rise in visitors from 3.41m to 3.54m.
Almost 300,000 Britons logged on to the internet for the first time in June, lifting the total number of UK web-users to 10.6 million.
