German-headquartered haircare titan Wella has tapped Koblenz-based network Select Communications for its (estimated) $100 million global ad account.

Select fought off rival pitches from a pair of Frankfurt shops – Michael Conrad & Leo Burnett and Bates Worldwide – plus two Hamburg agencies – D’Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles and Springer & Jacoby.

Select will take up the business on April 1, even though Wella’s contract with Hamburg-headquartered incumbent Jung von Matt does not run out until the end of the year. The sitting agency resigned the account in January over creative differences.

The newly-appointed shop will establish a ‘Wella Creative Unit’ at its offices in Berlin, Hamburg and New York to service the worldwide account. In areas where Select lacks a presence, the campaign will be overseen by former Wella global agency BBDO Worldwide or other local agencies that have been part of the company’s roster.
