Following the appointment last week of Koblenz-headquartered Select Communications to handle its $100 million global retail advertising account [WAMN: 7-Mar-01], German haircare mammoth Wella has tapped Bates Worldwide to look after the same duties in areas where its new lead agency is unrepresented.

Bates, whose Frankfurt shop lost out in the global review, will from April 1 take over the business from BBDO Worldwide in around thirty countries without a Select presence. The move ends Wella’s relationship with BBDO.

Also included within Bates’ remit will be local brands Kamuso in Japan and Herbazid in Asia, alongside all of Wella’s below-the-line duties.

“With the appointment of Bates we will expand internationally with our retail brands and we will secure a unified branding,” said Wella board member Axel Dietz.
