France telecom-owned internet business Wanadoo more than doubled its subscriber base in the year’s first quarter, registering 4.94 million active customers as at March 31, compared with 2.4m at the end of 2000.

Predicting it will have enlisted ten million subscribers by 2002, Wanadoo reported Q1 sales of Eu314.1 ($281m, £196m) although nothing as vulgar as profit was mentioned. Of total sales, Eu110.2m accrued from ISP activities, Eu179.4 from directory services, Eu15.7m from its internet portal and Eu6.6m from its online shop e-Merchant.

Wanadoo also owns the UK’s largest ISP FreeServe and Spanish service Indice Multimedia, both of which it acquired last year.
