DAVOS. Switzerland: Ambivalence is not a characteristic with which Rupert Murdoch is normally associated. So his apparent about-turn on adopting a subscription-free business model for the online version of The Wall Street Journal, surprised many at the World Economic Forum on Thursday.

In answer to a question, the News Corporation mogul responded: "We are going to greatly expand and improve the free part of [the Journal] online, but there will still be a strong offering."

In teasing mode, he added: "The really special things will still be a subscription service, and, sorry to tell you, probably more expensive."
