New York hotshop Berlin Cameron & Partners is reported to be in the final stages of negotiation to sell to WPP Group – a deal which if inked will see the Manhattan agency appointed helmsman of WPP’s troubled Red Cell network.
Red Cell has been in a state of turmoil since mid-November when chief executive Luca Linder abruptly announced his defection to BGS D’Arcy whereupon WPP immediately made a counter-offer [WAMN: 19 & 21-Nov-01]. Linder’s reaction to Sir Martin’s largesse is unknown.
Meantime, the long knives have been out at Red Cell’s London headquarters and at least four senior executives have quit or been shunted sideways. There is also talk of merging the London operation with another UK agency [WAMN: 30-Nov-01].
