WPP Group is launching a new communications planning network.

Dubbed Nylon, the venture is up and running in London and already working on accounts such as Xerox and Lego. It plans to open a New York office within the next few months (indeed, its name is derived from the New York-London axis), before spreading to key markets such as Northern Europe, South Africa and Asia.

Nylon is a joint project by WPP units Young & Rubicam and Mediaedge:cia, and hopes to recreate the success of independent planning shops such as Naked and Michaelides & Bednash. The latter agency's founding partner Tony Regan is helping to set up the WPP network, alongside Martin Thomas (formerly global planning chief at Mediaedge:cia) and Pru Parkinson (one-time UK ceo of Universal McCann).
