PARIS: French media and telecoms conglomerate Vivendi saw first quarter net profits climb 32% to €932 million ($1.26bn; £639m) from a year earlier.

The result was boosted by a gain of €239m from the sale of just over 10% of pay-TV operator Canal Plus France to the Lagardère group [WARC News: 17-Feb-06]. Revenue rose 5.3% to €5.02 billion.

Vivendi's Moroccan telecoms unit and its video games division both performed strongly as did the Canal Plus TV group.

But EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation and Amortization) at Universal Music fell 60% to €57m, compared with Q1 in 2006.
