Global media giant Viacom has set up a new marketing arm to promote some of its leading US brands.

The CBS Marketing Group will serve, among others, television network CBS, radio station operator Infinity Broadcasting and Viacom Outdoor. Its president is George Schweitzer, currently marketing chief at CBS.

The new unit's remit includes sales promotion in partnership with advertisers, network creative services and special events - but, says Schweitzer, its priority is CBS. Among its TV network initiatives is General Motors' link with popular reality show Survivor.

Schweitzer's elevation is the work of CBS chairman Leslie Moonves who became co-president of Viacom six months ago, since when he has been busy appointing his TV network executives to key positions.

The other half of the Viacom empire is presided over by Tom Freston whose fiefdom includes cable TV channel MTV and publisher Simon and Schuster.
