MUMBAI: US media giant Viacom is to tap the huge Indian television market with a Hindi-language channel. The group, which owns MTV Networks and Paramount Pictures, is teaming with TV18 for a 50/50 venture branded Viacom-18.

The deal will give Viacom access to TV18's expertise in setting-up TV channels within the subcontinent's labyrinthine media regulations, while the Indian company will access its global ally's content and production experience.

Viacom ceo Philippe Dauman says: "India is one of Viacom's priority markets for expansion internationally."
