Hispanic broadcasting giant Univision Communications is reportedly close to securing the purchase of the TV station chain belonging to USA Networks for $1.0–$1.2 billion.

Barry Diller-owned USA Networks announced earlier this week that it intends either to sell its string of thirteen TV stations dotted around the US or enter into a joint operating venture. Other parties interested in acquiring the group have been Disney and Tribune.

The Univision TV network already reaches 92% of US Hispanics – a burgeoning market in America – with an 80% audience share. Purchasing USA Networks’ TV assets would give it two stations in several major centres of the Latino population, such as Los Angeles and New York.
