Cable channel USA Network has appointed its third boss in less than a year, replacing Rob Sorcher, general manager for only six months, with Doug Herzog.

Herzog, who becomes president of the channel, is answerable to Stephen Chao, president of the USA Cable arm of parent company USA Networks.

The move came as a surprise to observers, since USA has been improving its performance in recent months, regaining a top three spot for primetime ratings. The new president, however, clearly feels there is still room for improvement: “There is a lot of competition out there … we have to do a better job of standing out,” he commented.

Herzog’s career has included a successful three years as chief executive at Comedy Central, followed by a less fruitful 14-month presidency at Fox Broadcasting which witnessed a ratings nosedive.
