The first week of December saw the value of US online sales jump 91% over the weekly average for November, according to the eSpending report from Goldman Sachs, Harris Interactive and Nielsen/NetRatings.

Drawn from a survey of 500 internet shoppers, the research concluded that Americans paid out $2.6 billion on web purchases in the first week of this month, well up from the $1.4bn spent in an average week in November.

Moreover, the average surfer upped online spend by $14 to $91 between the last week of last month and the first seven days of December, while the proportion of respondents making web purchases rose from 18% to 20% in the same two-week period.
