RESTON, Virginia: Despite US consumers' nervous tics about the state of the nation's economy, retailers have declared this year's Cyber Monday a resounding success.

According to figures from researcher comScore, online sales for the Monday following the Thanksgiving holiday climbed 21% to a record $733 million (€497m; £355m) year-on-year.

ComScore, commissioned by the National Retail Federation's online retail unit, says 44% of web users shopped online on Monday, with 60% of cyber dollars coming from work computers, and the remainder from home and university computers.

The average amount spent, however, slipped by 12% compared with last year.

Among the top retail websites were Amazon, Wal-Mart Stores and Dell.
