ARLINGTON, Virginia: New estimates published Tuesday by the Newspaper Association of America indicate that online ad revenues hit $750 million (€556.26m; £378.52m) in the first quarter of 2007, accounting for just over 7% of members' collective advertising income of $10.6 billion.

However, the 22% increase did not compensate for the decline in print advertising, especially in the internet-vulnerable area of classified ads - down 13.2% to $3.4bn.

Says NAA president/ceo John Sturm: "We expect advertising on newspaper websites to continue to fill the industry's overall revenue stream.

"Newspapers continue to make aggressive moves to redefine classified advertising through new online partnerships and other approaches that will position them for the future."
