America's online population has hit 200 million for the first time, according to the latest study from Nielsen//NetRatings.

Some 204.3m Americans accessed the web from home in February, about 75% of all US consumers. This is up from 66% a year earlier.

Nielsen also found that women now make up the majority of surfers. Around 77% of US females aged 25-34 have web access, compared with 76% of men; and in the 35-54 demographic, 82% of women are online compared with 80% of men.

"Women make the majority of purchases and household decisions, so it's no surprise that they are utilizing the internet as a tool for daily living," observed Kenneth Cassar, Nielsen's director of strategic analysis.
