UNITEDGLOBALCOM SET TO TAKE 25% OF TELEWEST

News, 27 June 2000

UK cable TV network Telewest is poised to become 25% owned by American telecoms group UnitedGlobalCom, as part of a multibillion-dollar strategic alliance between UGC and AT&T subsidiary Liberty Media.

The deal consolidates the US domination of Telewest, in which Microsoft aims to buy nearly 30% if permitted by EC regulators. Should Microsoft's purchase be blocked, UnitedGlobalCom could be a bidder for its Telewest shares, further consolidating its power in Britain.
