Independent News & Media, the international newspaper group headed by Sir Anthony O’Reilly, is the latest media firm to show an interest in the Herald titles in Scotland, put up for sale last month by SMG.

IN&M was among at least ten parties to lodge indicative offers for the regional papers last week. It is thought to be heading a consortium that includes several venture capital firms.

Rival offers have reportedly been made by regional publisher Johnston Press, Associated Newspapers, Guardian Media Group, the gothic Channel Isles-based Barclay brothers and venture capitalist 3i.

Bids reportedly range from around £180 million ($283m; €286m) to the £200m SMG is looking for.
