CHESHUNT, UK: Britain's largest supermarket chain, Tesco, which commands over 30% of the nation's supermarket sales (and additionally ingests one pound in every eight spent across the entire UK retail sector), now plans to retail its own-brand clothing ranges via the internet.
The move follows a pilot scheme last year and a 5% increase in clothing sales in the run-up to Christmas.
Says commercial director Richard Brasher: "Tesco's in-store clothing ranges have been popular in the shops where we sell them – so we've been looking at how we can bring the fashion ranges to more customers."
Online retail industry body IMRG and consultants Capgemini report that the UK clothing sector as a whole rose 32% year-on-year in December, more than doubling the 14% growth in all online retail sales and far exceeding that of the high street fashion chains.
