A new eighteen-hour daily slot on Freeview, the digital platform controlled by state broadcaster the BBC (with a little help from its transatlantic friends, NewsCorp's BSkyB and Crown Castle Communications), has attracted a torrent of interest.
Among those reportedly bidding up to £5 million ($9.41m; €7.23m) are British broadcasters ITV, Five and Channel 4. From the USA, Turner Broadcasting, Universal Studios Networks and Walt Disney are also thought to be contenders.
The bid deadline closed yesterday (Wednesday)at 4pm.
New developments in multiplexing technology enabled additional bandwith for the new channel. The slot becomes operational on 1 April.
