LONDON - Conflicting data has left Sainsbury's and Wal-Mart-owned rival Asda jostling for official second place behind Tesco in the UK supermarket league.
New research from ACNielsen says Sainsbury's market share over the last twelve weeks has risen to 15.3%, marginally beating Asda's 15.2%.
However, TNS Worldpanel shows Sainsbury's with a market share of 16%, compared with Asda's 16.3%.
Eighteen months ago Sainsbury's had fallen to 15.2%, while Asda peaked in January 2005 at 17%. Both lag light-years behind Tesco which holds 30%-plus.
