More than half of the UK population is now surfing the internet.

Researcher Nielsen/NetRatings reports 32.3 million Britons now log-on, compared with 30m in January last year. The highest volume of traffic is channeled via search engines, portals and communities sites, attracting around 87% of users.

Telecom and internet services drew 80% of users while computer and electrical goods sites attracted seventy-two per cent. The number of pages viewed per user/month increased year-on-year by 17% in January, up from around 855 to 1,000 pages.
