Paul Philpott, commercial director of car giant Toyota's UK arm has attacked the commercialism of state broadcaster BBC.

He accused the corporation of deliberately overrunning one of its top-rated programmes, East Enders, by a single minute so that viewers watching commercial television network ITV would miss the climax of a rival soap opera .

The ITV soap, Coronation Street, featured a much-hyped gay-kiss between two characters.

"They are distorting the commercial media market. Right now the BBC is the biggest threat to the commercial TV market," said Philpott.
