LONDON: Publicis-owned media network ZenithOptimedia today publishes its Top Thirty Global Media Owners report, providing an overview of the operations of the planet's top thirty media owners. Separated from the rest by a long stretch of clear blue water is Time Warner with annual revenues of nearly $30 billion (€22.86bn; £15.37bn) - nearly twice those of its nearest rival, News Corporation.

Among the report's main data, which are based on revenues from activities that support advertising, are . . .

  • The top 30 global media owners between them generate a total of $215 billion in media revenue.

  • The US has by far the most media owners in the ranking, followed by (in descending order) Japan, France and the UK, Germany, Italy and Mexico.

  • Two new-media companies, Google and Yahoo, are among the top 30.
The rankings strip out non-media revenues to provide a true measure of each company's size and power in the media market. The ranking is based on revenues for 2005, or the nearest equivalent for companies whose financial years are different from calendar years.

Predictably, the five top media owners are all US-headquartered. Each has at least a 50% share in a US television network, but their other holdings vary in nature and international extent. In all, sixteen of the top thirty media owners are from the US.

Other countries with media owners in the top thirty are Japan (4), France and the UK (3 each), Germany (2) and Italy and Mexico (1 each).
