In a move that was as radical as expected [WAMN: 22-Jun-04], the fresh face at the top of the BBC announced plans for a major management overhaul on his first day in office.
Mark Thompson, the new BBC director general, claims he is building on foundations laid by predecessors Greg Dyke and John Birt to ensure the BBC's future has a "bigger role than ever in building public value, creating a far more open, responsive, agile BBC and always putting our audiences first."
Mark Byford, acting director general during the interview process, has been given the challenge of overseeing all journalistic activities at the BBC, while strategy and distribution director Carolyn Fairbairn steps in to monitor management of the licence fee.
Thompson claims this is just the beginning as the BBC prepares for "more rapid and radical" changes "than at any previous point in its history."
