Swedish-owned, Luxembourg-headquartered, Metro International plans to launch a free daily tabloid newspaper in the Big Apple next month -- May 5, insiders predict.
The Metro format has already proved successful in Boston and Philadelphia, as it has in major cities across Europe and elsewhere on the globe.
Metro itself declined to comment on the launch -- or even confirm such a plan exists -- but those close to the operation say it will kick-off with around 250,000 copies distributed daily at key transportation sites.
It will compete head-on with the Tribune Company's extant free title amNewYork which boasts an audited a circulation of around 209,000.
