ROUND ROCK, Texas: Dell Computer, flailing to regain its position at the top of the heap, on Monday announced a retail sales venture via which it will sell its products in the People's Republic of China - the largest national market for PCs outside the USA.

The deal with electronics retailer Gome is a break with the US computer maker's fading formula of selling direct to consumers and businesses - although it already runs a string of kiosks through which Chinese consumers can place orders.

The Gome chain will supplement these small outlets through its hundreds of retail stores in over 160 cities, providing Dell with its first significant foothold in China's retail market.
