TOKYO: Japanese electronics titan Sony is reported to be planning a mobile online movie download service for consumers who want to watch films on PlayStation Portable devices.

The new offering, to be launched early in 2007, will start with the company's own movies but is expected to include other studios' output later.

In conjunction with existing music store, Sony Connect, the service would even the playing field in competition with Apple's iTunes store, which sells movies from the Walt Disney Company in addition to music.
